To Catch a Dresari…
Part I…
**********
The streets of Mutrone were somewhat busy, with the usual bustle of the locals moving to and fro on the stone walkways and roads while merchants called to him from the sides of the road, their stands laden with this and that in an effort to squeak out a living. Vakr’s hooves thundered underneath, and Fico trotted alongside them as joyfully as ever, unaware that they were here on business. It was the first time Jericho Almados had been in Erando in a great while, and, with a little luck, he wouldn’t stay long; he didn’t care too much about Zetomar as a whole for some reason. Still, the high bounty on this Canto Suavie fellow was enough to stir his stomach. He wasn’t hurting for money, but it never hurt to have a little extra, especially with a growing family.
His informant, a sly little Ferdanie lass who had taken notice of the big Dresari man when he had wondered into town, had given him the name of the inn where his target was staying and everything. The Unbridled Mare. What was it with inn owners always naming their places of business something crazy? The Bannered Mare, the Unbridled Mare, The Bears Balls, The Sultry Wench…they were always something out in left field. Jericho laughed a little. The name of the establishment where he would be kicking ass didn’t really matter, so long as he got what he came for and was paid in the end.
Canto Suavie had allegedly killed a Dresari woman and a smattering of humans at some point in the recent past. The reward was high for his capture and return. Dead he wasn’t worth as much, but, something was better than nothing, and Jericho wasn’t particularly choosy which way he took him back.
The inn eventually came into view, the twin suns reaching the middle of their daily peek as he brought Vakr to a halt in front of the establishment. The horse stamped with in an irritated manner and crow hopped a little to the side before Jericho issued a reassuring “whoa”, and then began calling to the people who were sitting on the porch. His directives were clear. Go in and tell Canto Suavie to come out, or there would be trouble…
